It started in 2008 with a simple walk through Cork's
countryside. I was volunteering with the Irish Rambling Club,
leading gentle nature walks for older adults. What struck me
wasn't the scenery — though it was stunning — but the
transformation I saw in people. A woman who'd been mostly
indoors for months suddenly felt alive again. An older man
shared stories about places he'd forgotten he loved.
That's when it clicked. Outdoor recreation wasn't being
reserved for the young or athletic. There was this huge gap
between "serious hiking" and "sitting at home." I wanted to
bridge that gap.
I studied Environmental Science at University College Cork
from 2005 to 2009, focusing my thesis on accessible green
space design for older populations. It wasn't glamorous
research, but it mattered. Real spaces for real people. After
graduation, I spent years exploring Ireland's midlands —
walking every trail, documenting picnic spots, learning the
seasonal rhythms of places like Lough Derg.
My breakthrough came in 2016 when my guidebook "Gentle Paths:
Walking Lough Derg at Your Own Pace" was shortlisted for the
Irish Environment & Society Book Award. That validation
meant everything. It told me I was onto something genuine.
Now at varilabs Ltd, I combine my field expertise with a
mission to make outdoor recreation feel accessible and
inspiring. Not intimidating. Not exclusive. Just honest
information from someone who's actually walked these paths.
